When this movie was first advertised, I told Ami that we were going to watch it on the opening weekend. I knew it would be good from then. The only thing I was not aware of was how good it was going to be. See, Mel Gibson may have gotten himself into a lot of trouble with his latest drunken thoughts but it does not hide the fact that he can make a movie.
"Apocalypto" has been showing almost a month now and I only had the time to go last night to watch it. What surprised me is that even after a month, the theater was still half full. Really, we were not going to see it but we ended up at the movies and we decided then and there that we would watch this since it was the only movie showing at the time. The movie was starting at 11:40pm. This is a must-see movie. If it is still showing in the cinema, watch it on the big screen. There are some movies that you just need to see in a cinema to get the full effects of it. This is one.
Basically, "Apocalypto," as the name suggests, portrays the end of the Mayan civilization and one man's attempt to reunite with his family after his village is destroyed, his relatives and friends are killed, and he is captured by other warriors. There is very graphic violence in the movie but we have to keep in mind that the movie is based on historical evidence of Mayan sacrifices and those were in no way dainty. We got out at 2:30am from the cinema and I can honestly say that I never noticed that this movie was 2_1/2 hours long. It is fast paced and intriguing. If you learnt about the Mayans in history classes, this movie seals in what you learnt. At the end of the movie, patrons cheered. I joined in too=0) My final verdict on "Apocalypto:" I would give it an "awesome."

Fwennie, me knos you and Nan both liked the movie a LOT, but me is really not convinced if it is worth it... See this news piece:

There are many more around which says he butchered the beautiful Mayan civilization to show that they were all savages until the 'Christian' Spaniards (?) came and 'saved' them.
EVen Wiki agrees:

As for Mel Gibson, me still hates meself for watching Passion. (I wondered if I could go SouthPark style to get back me's money:P).
But me might still watch it sometime, if I can get the courage to stand the violence.
fwennie at the beginning of the movie, there is a line, pay attention to it.
he did not butcher the mayan civilization, he did not imply that the christians saved them either, for this one would need to pay attention to the end of the movie, to realise that this was never implied.
what he draws on is basic human instincts and emotions, please fwennie ignore the critics on this one and trust me please.
It is a beautiful portrayal of the mayan, aztecz, and incas.
fewnnie woman who wrote review did not see complete movie, me is convinced!
pay very close attention to the dailogue at the end!
I really do not see how the film made the mayans out to be "savages." really, we still have to understand that this was ancient times and in the beginning of the movie, read carefully the quote that is on the screen. there is a lot to be said there. I thought of this quote all through the movie. How come Hinduism still exists when all these cultures that existed at the same time does not? And I found that the quote fitted it. The very same historians will tell you that the reason was because there was internal wars and feuds that caused the Spaniards to easily take over these people. No one denies that the Spaniard brought with them diseases that wiped out entire civilizations but at the same time, we have to understand that these pyramids were made for the very same sacrifices. Any history book will tell you that there were sacrifices and the heart was cut out of the person, then the person was beheaded. I did not watch the movie to see what was superior or which race was better but I watched it as someone who is fascinated by ancient cultures. I did not go there to judge mel gibson.
I only said that I liked the movie because of the accuracies that I saw...not with the "savage" pieces, that would be normal I guess to the people of the region and their beliefs...but because of the advanced learning they had. They built structures that still stand today. The mayans were geniuses and really, if you see the movie, Gibson does zoom in on the buildings and he shows advanced weapons, etc.
OK OK me takes back all me's comments. Me will also surely see the movie.:)
