Watching Ernesto

After a 62 hour week last week and another road trip this weekend, i was thankful that i did not have to work this morning. Actually, I go in at 6 o' clock this evening. Mondays are cool for me. last week, I worked almost double the hours that I usually do. Part of the reason is that there was no other people in the bookstore except my boss and me. And if i worked all those hours, he did more! Porgito walked out some time ago.
Anyway, this morning, i woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. Of course it was Ami calling to tell me that he was out of the office for the day and he was off to listening to complaints about banking. Sounded pretty boring to me. He told me i better run over to the gas station and fill up the gas containers because a hurricane was coming our way. This one is Ernesto. Really, I guess we are used to this by now. Wilma was a category 3. Ernesto will be maybe a category 1 storm. The meterologists are saying this one will hit tomorrow. I really thought that it will come on Wednesday but I must admit, i really do not pay much attention to the weather. It was my aunt in NY who called first and told us.
For most of us, we do not really take category 1 storms that seriously although we do put down the shutters. So I guess we will be in a coccoon for a day or two. Really, life does not change much for us. When we bought our house a few years ago, we were appalled that the previous owners would still use gas stoves and water heaters when the rest of the world was using electric stoves and heaters. Then when the power went out for the 9 days after Wilma, we were thankful that we were amongst the few that had hot meals everyday and hot showers. We were even able to celebrate Divali as usual and the diyas looked brighter becasue there were no lights except their lights. Gas lines turned out to be a major asset last year.
I looked out the window of my home and I saw that there were a lot of cars in the gas station so i decided not to go. I will send my dad over when he gets home.
Now for the weather today. it is unbelievably hot...and deceivingly calm. There is no wind...probably only a mild breeze...It always amazes me how the weather can deteriorate in a few hours. Right now, Ernesto is in Cuba. By the morning it should be in the Keys if the forecast is correct so it should reach us by the evening. Hopefully, it will just be some showers and just a tropical storm. We are only under a watch and people are already in a frenzy at the gas stations. Maybe i can talk like this because we are prepared this time. We will see....

About the girl...who was hit on her head with the sledge hammer. This is regarding the blog on abusive relationships: After two weeks and some, she woke up. I got this news on Friday morning and it made my day. I am happy for everyone who is close to her. the guy is in jail but his mother refuses to give the police a statement. Now hopefully the girl will make a full recovery. everyone's prayers worked for her.

This is a negative one now. One of my friends, Jose, lost his nephew last week. His nephew was involved in a motorcycle accident on the NJ turnpike. 120 miles per hour. Jose told me that every bone in his nephew's body was broken and he lived for 1_1/2 hours after the accident. His nephew's girlfriend died on the spot. I was sad for them. Everyone is young once and some of us want to have fun. As we get older, we seem to become more responsible but yes, when we are young, we do not think. For this reason, i only sympathized. People said that the guy was irresponsible and maybe he was but i remember something a coworker said a long time ago. She said it in spanish but it translated to, "the cow always forgets when it was young." The boy was 22 and the girl was 19. Jose told me he raised his nephew. his sister is not in a good state and the girl's father went crazy. He is in the hospital. Jose suffered a heart attack when he heard the news. He was in the hospital and then when he got out, he had to go identify his nephew's body. Although it does not bring much solace, the nephew purchased the cycle without a driver's license in NJ. That is not supposed to happen. You cannot sell a vehicle to anyone without a license. In any case, it is the loss of a life and a terrible tragedy.
