Today, I worked alone. I opened the store and stayed there thinking up things to do when I was done doing what needed to be done there. Thank goodness i carry books with me! I turned on the TV to the Indian music videos and started reading. Have begun to reread one of my favorite books: A House for Mr. Biswas by Sir Vidia Naipaul. He captured the Indian culture in 1950s Trinidad so well! Time went by. I cannot say it flew like it used to when Laila was there but I guess it passed by somehow.
I had the very interesting pleasure of being a public commuter today. I took the bus home. Boy was it a trip! There are very interesting people on the bus. I missed Furgie though. Usually, when I am with Furgie, I make fun of the Haitian translations of the important places on the route home. It is so funny the way they speak. It's broken French (pronounced "FWEnch"). Of course I cannot say how many times Furgie got me in trouble while we were coming home together. Once, in Trinidad, we were coming home from evening lessons and Furgie saw a guy with curly hair passing by us. At the same time, Furgie had to open her mouth and say "Curlylocks." Ten seconds later, I had a very angry guy walk up to me and start cussing me out--"Who the f-ck you callin curlylocks?" Furgie was no where around me either....don't know where she went. Luckily, the guy walked off without any further confusion.
Anyways, back to the Haiti. I had a Haitian customer who used to make my days happy at work. Lovely used to take care of old people for his living so the highlight of his day would be when he came in the store. We used to insult each other in a friendly way and while we were at it, we would end up laughing so much! He would come in and would ask me "Mami, sak passe!" and i would reply, "na brulle, Lovely." In spanish it will be "que paso" and "nada mucho." I will explain why i call him Lovely some other time. He called me Mami after he heard Ami call me that one day. Now, he lives in Hollywood (Florida...hehe) and it is too far from us. However, he will come on Fridays to visit me at the store. I used to fight so much with Lovely! He used to blow kisses to me and Furgie and according to Furgie, "it used to make her blood crawl."
I saw many interesting people on the bus today and I felt nostalgic. I rarely miss Trinidad as I used to but today i missed public transport, Trini style.
So work has become somewhat boring. It's the dog days here. Business is slow but i find things to do. My mind is always working. Sometimes, i can hear the wheels turning if i listen hard enough....There is no one to talk to except the customers and when they come in, i talk their ears off!
